I developed this project both to share the history in these letters and to see if I could do it! (Actually, it turned out ok.)I am not a Civil War scholar, (which probably comes as no surprise to those of you who are,) but a Librarian at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, who lives in beautiful Santa Cruz County, California.
Thanks to those who helped in this endeavor:
- My wife, Linda Proudfoot, a writer, for her help. In addition to creating the Home Page story, she assisted in reading, typing, and proofreading. (Computer spell checkers were not much help!)
- Newton and Hannah's great-great grandson and my son Ken Proudfoot, who helped with the graphics.
- Steve Watkins, formerly at the University of California at Santa Cruz Science Library, for providing the original host for the project. Steve has since moved to the Library at Cal State Monterey, and UCSC is no longer interested in hosting the site -- so things continue to change in life and on the Internet.
- And, most importantly, to Newton and Hannah's daughter, Mable Scott Dalby, and her daughter (my Mom), Hannah Marjorie Dalby Proudfoot, for protecting the letters and keeping them together so that we could enjoy them in context.
